Millennials did not invent the internet, yet it has become predominantly their chosen place of work. For this I have so much admiration. But where are all the slightly more mature bloggers and influencers? Has social media passed us by?

We are fast moving away from the concept of work being a location and it being the actual activity that affords all of our other activities. With office space becoming more expensive, employers are looking to reduce overheads and increase productivity with more home and agile workers. Home workers are rapidly on the increase and more and more people can make money from home. So why make that money for someone else?

Make that money for you!

Young bloggers and influencers have mastered the art. They are generating their own income, creating their own tribe and followings, working for themselves. There are more self employed people than ever before. Affiliate marketing, Adsense, paid posts, product placements, reviews and training packages can generate a significant revenue across social media. I am not saying it is easy. I am certain it does take a significant amount of effort, knowledge and time. What I am saying is, why are so few Generation X and Baby Boomers doing this?

This throw away modern lifestyle we talk about is one we have created. We have built our children up to believe that they can be or do anything that they want to. Yet bizarrely, when they do, we look on it with disdain. There are no longer ‘jobs for life’, is that not a good thing? It’s great to have a career, it’s even better to live a full and happy life. So why do we not listen to our own advice? Take the moment and the opportunity and own it.

Blogging success

It impresses me that the younger generation are less risk adverse. While conversely completely money orientated and materialistic, I am amazed at those that are prepared to sacrifice everything and work hard to achieve what they believe in. Is that not true entrepreneurialism? Failure used to be, not an option, it is now a lesson learned to become bigger, better, stronger. That just has to be a good thing.

Is it too late?

It’s never too late for anything. Always aim to be a life-long learner, keep your mind open and your options even more open. That’s why I am on a year long mission to absorb as much social media knowledge as I can cram in, to take me into the next phase of my life. My next generation of ME.

You’ve clearly found my blog so what else have I been up to?

I have created a Pinterest account and I am enjoying randomly ‘pinning’ things that I love. You can read about my Instagram first few days here and sadly I’m completely bombing on Twitter. I need to up the ante here and learn more about tweeting! I have signed up for AWIN, and I am awaiting approval for my first affiliate marketing programmes. This is where I hopefully intend to make my initial income via click throughs. When I have garnered sufficient knowledge and expertise to pass on to others what I have learned on this journey, my next plan of attack will be to create easy to follow online courses.

Have I made any money yet?

Hell no, so far I have spent the princely sum of £24.38 on my domain name and my blog hosting from GoDaddy. I have consumed most of my evenings for the last few weeks reading and researching.

What I have received is, an invitation for drinks at Aveika bar in Newcastle for a Christmas showcase launch. An invitation to review a meal at a local Chinese restaurant; The Imperial, and an opportunity to sample and review a multivitamin liquid for the over 50’s; Nutra 50+. Once I have tried it out for a couple of weeks I will give you my full and frank review. I have also recently been a hand model for Kiss adhesive nails!

Will this pay the bills? Definitely not, so work beckons again on Monday.

Am I enjoying myself so far?

Hell yes.

It’s great to be a people pleaser, in reality as in life not everyone is going to like you or what you write, so be authentic and play to your strengths to appeal to your chosen audience. More importantly do what you want to do, write what you want to write and be who you want to be before time catches up on you. Carpe Diem.

Join me on that journey.

Hell yeah? sooo enjoyed reading your post! As another 50-whatever blogger I so can relate to all and everythinh you are saying. Yes, we need a lot more mature blogger. With all respect of the youngsters, but I believe they are playing in a different league for a different audience.

Thanks Klaudia I am sure there are so many mature inner bloggers just waiting to get out but sometimes the technology may seem a little bit daunting so they don’t even get started.
